I went to my favorite beach today
To say goodbye.
The tide was leaving,
So was summer
And so was I.
The clustered many were gone.
Lovely shapes of rocks
And cliffs stood unadorned.
Where were the gulls?
I missed their bold shrieks.
Sandpipers had abandoned their beat,
And starfish no longer
Were descending.
Others were walking,
Slowly, like mourners,

Uncertain where to stand,
When to leave;
Taking shells, rocks
Blanched wood,
To be reminded, no doubt,
Of winter’s temporary stay.
I stood there,
Toes embedded
In the chill, wet sand,
Breathing the salt filled air,
Knowing, like a sad lover,
These joys will go on,
Whether I return or not.
